The Australia Fiji Business Council is pleased to announce that Mr Geoffrey N Shaw was elected President of the Council at the 31st Annual General Meeting held in Sydney on the 13th October, 2017. 

Mr Shaw brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to the work of the Australia Fiji Business Council, having spent over 40 years actively involved with Fiji tourism.  Prior to his election as President, Mr Shaw had been Vice-President of the Australia Fiji Business Council for the last eight years and has served on the executive committee since 1997.

Following his election as President, Mr Shaw presented opening remarks at the 23rd Australia Fiji Business Forum which also took place on 13th October, 2017 in Sydney stating; ‘this is a singular honour for me as I believe that a strong Council plays a very important role in the historic and strong bilateral business relationship between our two countries, and to be entrusted with this leadership position of the Council provides me with another avenue of continuing the work I have been promoting virtually all my adult life. That is, working to bring employment and economic growth to Fiji and growing the business and investment relationship between Australia and Fiji.’

Mr Shaw’s experience in Fiji has extended to his ownership in overseeing and developing various projects and initiatives. These include the purchase and re-development of Castaway Island, Fiji and the concept and development of the Outrigger Fiji Beach Resort. Over the years, Mr Shaw has actively engaged with relevant Government departments and Ministries in Fiji. He has negotiated and secured construction finance through the World Bank, European Investment Bank, Export & Finance Insurance Corporation and the provision of takeout finance through then Fiji National Provident Fund and local commercial banks.

Mr Shaw holds a number of key positions that keep him involved in Fiji including: President –  Australia Fiji Business Council (Sponsor Member); Director – Airports Fiji Limited; Deputy Chairman – Tourism Fiji; Chairman – Westpac Fiji Local Advisory Board; Director – Marsh Fiji Advisory Board and Chairman – Mamanuca Environment Society.

The Australia Fiji Business Council, formed in 1986, is in its fourth decade promoting growth in the Australia-Fiji business relationship and economic growth in Fiji.  Mr Shaw’s election as President will add further impetus to the Council’s work.

Mr Shaw expressed his appreciation on behalf of Council members for the work of outgoing President, Mr. Greg Pawson of Westpac Pacific Banking.
