Energy Fiji Limited (EFL) is in the midst of an international search for a new Chief Executive Officer to lead the company during a critical phase of its transition to renewable energy. The company is seeking a visionary leader to drive its ambitious goal of sourcing 90 per cent of Fiji’s energy requirements from renewable sources by 2035.
The decision to conduct a global search reflects EFL’s commitment to finding the best candidate to guide its efforts in clean energy innovation and infrastructure development. As Fiji’s leading energy provider, EFL plays a pivotal role in the country’s economic and environmental goals. The appointment of a new CEO is seen as an opportunity to bring in fresh leadership to help achieve these objectives. The new appointment will see Hasmukh Patel, the long-serving CEO of Energy Fiji Limited, stepping away from his role.
EFL has made significant strides in recent years to strengthen its renewable energy portfolio. A major initiative is the exploration of the Namosi Hydro-Electric Scheme, with feasibility studies launched in 2024. This project aims to develop multiple small-scale hydro-electric plants in the Namosi region, offering a substantial boost to Fiji’s renewable energy capacity.
In addition, EFL has issued tenders for the development of solar power plants with a combined capacity of 21.93 MW. These projects, part of a public-private partnership, will provide much-needed diversification to Fiji’s energy mix and reduce dependency on fossil fuels.
EFL’s Ten-Year Power Development Plan (2022-2031), estimated at $4.3 billion, underscores the company’s commitment to building a robust and sustainable energy infrastructure. The plan focuses on integrating renewable energy, upgrading the electricity grid, and ensuring reliable power supply to meet the needs of a growing economy.
EFL’s ongoing projects align with Fiji’s National Development Plan, which prioritises sustainable energy solutions to support the country’s socio-economic development. By adopting innovative technologies and expanding its renewable energy base, EFL aims to position Fiji as a leader in the Pacific region for clean energy initiatives.
The right candidate will be expected to build on EFL’s achievements and lead the company in tackling future challenges, including reducing greenhouse gas emissions, enhancing energy reliability, and maintaining affordability for Fijians. The new CEO will play a crucial role in shaping the future of energy in Fiji, ensuring sustainable and inclusive growth for generations to come.
