Infrastructure development and its critical role in the country’s economic growth and resilience were the main flavour of deliberations at the recent 28th Fiji-Australia/Australia-Fiji Business Forum in Suva (29-31 August). Multiple presentations highlighted ongoing and future projects across various sectors, including transportation, energy, and airport management. Leaders from key agencies such as the Fiji Roads Authority (FRA), Energy Fiji Limited (EFL), and Fiji Airports outlined challenges, opportunities, and the strategic importance of infrastructure in positioning Fiji for sustainable development.

An entire section on Day 2 was dedicated to an “Infrastructure Deep Dive” (see accompanying story).

The Fiji Roads Authority, led by Apisai Ketenilagi, provided a detailed overview of the nation’s transport infrastructure projects. Established in 2012, the FRA is responsible for the management, maintenance, and development of Fiji’s roads, bridges, and jetties. With significant support from the government and international funding agencies, the FRA has launched projects aimed at enhancing connectivity and facilitating economic growth. The FRA also announced several upcoming procurement packages, valued at around USD 254 million, which will cover capital works and consulting services to ensure the country’s transport network continues to support development.

Energy Fiji Limited (EFL) presented its ambitious plans to meet Fiji’s growing energy demands and achieve its sustainability targets. CEO Hasmukh Patel outlined EFL’s key goal of ensuring that 90 per cent of Fiji’s energy comes from renewable sources by 2025. Major projects include the development of hydropower schemes such as the Qaliwana and Namosi projects on Viti Levu and the expansion of solar photovoltaic power plants. To support these initiatives, EFL has projected an investment of FJD 4.2 billion over the next decade for power generation and transmission network improvements. This will include the construction of over 1,000 km of new transmission lines and the development of at least 20 new substations.

Fiji Airports, under the leadership of Director of Projects Niranjwan Chettiar, focused on aviation infrastructure, which is critical for boosting tourism, trade, and connectivity. Nadi International Airport is set to undergo significant expansions, including new gates, apron expansions, and a state-of-the-art baggage handling system. The airport is projected to handle up to 8 million international passengers when fully upgraded. Fiji Airports is also committed to sustainable practices, incorporating green technologies and energy-efficient operations across its facilities.

These initiatives are key to strengthening the country’s economic resilience, attracting investment, and positioning Fiji as a hub for regional connectivity and trade in the Pacific.
