Fiji and the Asian Development Bank (ADB) have signed a landmark Transaction Advisory Services Agreement to support the development of a new sanitary landfill and improve urban waste management. The agreement, which was signed between ADB and Fiji’s Ministry of Local Government, aims to modernize waste management infrastructure in the country.

Fiji’s urban centres, particularly Suva and Nadi, have been facing increasing waste management challenges due to rapid urbanization and population growth. The project will help address these issues by developing a sustainable landfill that meets international environmental standards.

ADB will provide technical assistance, feasibility studies, and funding support for the project. The initiative aligns with Fiji’s National Sustainable Development Plan, which prioritizes environmental conservation and climate resilience.

Local authorities have welcomed the project, emphasizing its importance in reducing pollution, improving public health, and creating green jobs. The new landfill is expected to incorporate waste-to-energy technology, further enhancing Fiji’s commitment to renewable energy and sustainable development.

The project is seen as a crucial step in ensuring that Fiji’s urban infrastructure keeps pace with its economic growth while minimising environmental impact.
