The South Pacific Tourism Exchange (SPTE) 2024, a landmark event for the Pacific tourism industry, took place in Nadi, Fiji on May 4-5. This event marked a significant milestone as it was the first time the SPTE was hosted in Fiji, moving from its traditional venues in Australia and New Zealand. The event was organised by the South Pacific Tourism Organisation (SPTO) in collaboration with Fiji’s Ministry of Tourism and Civil Aviation (MTCA) and Tourism Fiji. SPTE 2024 was strategically scheduled to precede the Fijian Tourism Expo (FTE), which was held on May 6-7, providing a comprehensive week of tourism-focused activities and networking opportunities.

The SPTE 2024 gathered a diverse group of participants, including national tourism offices, inbound tour operators, airlines, hoteliers, resort owners, transport operators, and activity and shore excursion operators. These participants represented SPTO’s 20 Pacific Island member countries, including Fiji, Cook Islands, Kiribati, Samoa, Solomon Islands, and Vanuatu. Additionally, international buyers, such as travel wholesalers, travel agencies, travel planners, and online travel agencies from over 25 global tourism source markets, were present, making the event a global affair.

Fiji Airways, the platinum partner for SPTE 2024, played a crucial role by providing flight support for key trade and media representatives. This partnership underscored Fiji Airways’ commitment to connecting the Pacific to the world and supporting the region’s tourism recovery efforts. The airline’s involvement was instrumental in enhancing visibility and engagement with global travel markets, showcasing its pivotal role in the region’s tourism industry.

Christopher Cocker, CEO of SPTO, highlighted the significance of SPTE 2024, emphasising that the event celebrated the diverse cultures and unique tourism products of the Pacific region. He noted that SPTE 2024 aimed to create valuable opportunities for collaboration and growth within the industry. The Fijian government, represented by Permanent Secretary for MTCA Salaseini Daunabuna, expressed strong support for the initiative, reinforcing the government’s commitment to strengthening regional ties and advancing the Pacific tourism industry.

SPTE 2024 turned out a dynamic showcase that celebrated the vibrant cultures and tourism experiences of the Pacific. The event fostered stronger regional cooperation and contributed to the sustainability and success of the region’s tourism sector. It served as a milestone in promoting the Pacific as a premier travel destination and enhancing global visibility for its tourism offerings. The successful execution of SPTE 2024 in Fiji highlighted the country’s growing role in the regional tourism landscape and its dedication to supporting the broader Pacific community.
