Fiji Airways will begin direct flights between Nadi and Western Sydney International Airport from 19 March 2027, becoming the first international airline announced to operate from Sydney’s new airport.
The airline will operate three services a week on Mondays, Fridays and Sundays using Boeing 737 MAX 8 aircraft.
The new route will add more than 53,000 seats annually between Fiji and Western Sydney and will operate alongside Fiji Airways’ existing services to Sydney Kingsford Smith Airport.
The expansion is expected to provide another boost to tourism and business travel between Australia and Fiji while giving residents of Western Sydney easier access to the Pacific.
Fiji Airways managing director and chief executive Paul Scurrah said Western Sydney’s rapidly growing population and sizeable Fijian community made the route a natural addition to the airline’s network.
Western Sydney is home to more than 70 per cent of Sydney’s Fijian community, according to Western Sydney International Airport chief executive Simon Hickey.
The flight schedule has also been designed to connect passengers through Nadi to destinations including Tonga and Samoa.
That strengthens Fiji Airways’ broader strategy of using Nadi as a hub between Australia, North America and the Pacific islands.
The announcement comes during a period of strong tourism demand for Fiji, which recently surpassed one million visitor arrivals over a 12-month period.
Australia remains Fiji’s largest visitor market and aviation capacity between the countries is an important driver of hotels, restaurants, tour operators and other tourism businesses.
The new airport will also provide another point of access for business travellers and potentially for cargo as Western Sydney develops into a major transport and logistics hub.
For the Australia Fiji business relationship, the significance goes beyond tourism.
Greater airline capacity makes it easier for companies to move staff, customers and partners between the two markets and reinforces the already close commercial links between Fiji and New South Wales.
The route also represents another substantial vote of confidence in continuing growth in travel between Australia and Fiji.
